Nostalgia: SFS install

Old article explaining install of SFS (smart file system). This article was done back in 2003

SmartFileSystem Guide… 1)

AmigaWorld is NOT responsible for damaging your HD. Do this at your own risk! I’ve got SmartFileSystem on my HD since 1999, and no problems. This guide is a guide on how I did it and more. -webmaster

SmartFileSystem Info… 2)

SmartFileSystem is for free. You can download it from Aminet. Use LHA to extract the file. You should use RAM disk for this! Copy the SmartFileSystem onto a diskette for backup-reasons, and also copy SmartFileSystem to L: on your system partition. Now wait, and read…

SmartFileSystem Warning… 3)

System should be up and running in 10min, but a help-warning! Dont forget your important programs and files.

You should backup> all important things on your hard drive. By replacing filesystems on Amiga, you also format it. So backup the most important things wich you use.

Our “keep” guide:
# Programs!
# Important documents and pictures!
# Keys to registered programs!
# Libs!
# Your S: directory!
…burn them on a disk, transfer them to another HD disk or if you got a HUGE FTP server. Use it.

SmartFileSystem HDToolBox…4)

Now open HDtoolBox. You can open it in many ways. Thru Workbench “Executive command” and write: HDtoolBox, or click on your Tools dir inside your system partition and click on the HDtoolBox icon, or you can start it thru CLI/Shell.

When this is done, HDToolBox should open, and this screen should open:

Click on “Partisjoner disk”, wich brings you to the partition part of the program:

This is where everything starts to become a bit more difficult. But if you know what youre doing, this shouldnt be a problem at all. Now this screenshot shows you how it is when SFS is installed right. The “Oppstartsbar” is clicked. That means, that this is the partition wich boots the whole system. It also shows how the boot partition should be configurated. Its name is DH0: wich should be the partion that boots AmigaOS thru SFS.

SmartFileSystem Replacing… 5)

To start Replacing, please click on Endre(change). Here you actually replace the old filesystem with SFS. (Note: Only the selected partition will change, not the entire disk!)

Lets look at the change window:

This is where you delete your old filesystem on the selected partition. In this case, this would be your main boot partition. Delete the partition by clicking on “Slett partisjon”. When you’ve done that, click on “Oppdater filsystem” (this should be something like: “Update filesystem”) and select SFS either from the booted partition, or from a Emergency-disk like me. (Emergency-disk can be done thru AmigaOS v3.9 cd. I also copied SmartFileSystem to it.)

Were not done! Now you should write down the numbers wich is on the picture. Thats: 0×53465300 My version of SFS is v1.58. I personally havent updated the SFS since 1999, but this is because of all the stuff and things I’ve got on my 6.4gb HD and now I also have a 60gb HD :=). I just love SFS! :) Stable… Now when youre done.. Click OK (DONE!)

SmartFileSystem Numbers… 6)

Now you should click on “Legg til/Oppdater” (Add/Update) here:

Wich brings you to this one:

The numbers is right for SFS boot partition. Copy and Paste:
# Filesystem: SFS\00
# Mask: 0x7FFFFFFE
# MaxTransfer: 0x0001FE00
# blokk størrelse (blokk size): 1024
# Automonter denne partisjonen (Automount this partition): YES

When DONE! and check everything right. (You can experiment with the blokk size, but it should be 1024) Click OK

Now you click OK all the way and either you have to boot. Then a NODOS disk should apear. NOTE! You cant format it normally, you have to choose “hurtig format” (fast format) on the partition wich you’ve just changed to be a SFS partition. Name it something, anything. For example: “Workbench”, since this is your boot partition.

Now when your done. Copy your AmigaOS files from the FFS partition to the new “main” SFS partition. Then go into HDToolBox again and choose DH0: as your boot partition, like the example over showed, and here again:

Click on the boot check box, click ok, ok.. Boot Amiga, or HDToolBox will boot for you. Now, if you’ve done everything right. Your Amiga should boot a bit faster. Now you can control HDToolBox from your new SFS partition. Change all of the other partitions to SFS in the same way.

Good luck!
If you have any problems. Send AmigaWorld questions to our e-mail: SFS help If there is any interest. I could create a Q&A page. This depends if you want it or not.
